Serves 3 to 4
1 cup white rice
1 tsp vegetable oil
½ tsp black mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds
2 cups water
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper

- Pour the oil in a saucepan and add mustard and cumin seeds.
- Start the heat under the pot. When the mustard seeds start to pop (this is unmistakable), add the water, rice and salt.
- Bring to a boil. Put on a low simmer and cover, cooking 15 to 20 minutes or until the rice is done.
- Add the black pepper, and mix in before serving
